The documentary was filmed at the Azadpur market in Delhi, in the ancient streets of Kolkata, on a film set, in the Darjeeling tea growing region, and at an upper-class teahouse in Pune. Five tea makers show what they have in common: They prepare masala chai, the most popular drink in India. But even though they share the same passion, they all pursue the art of tea making in their very own way. 'Masala Chai' is an emotional journey through India that provides information not just on this much-loved and widely available tea drink, but also on social conditions and contrasts as well as the country's traditions.
