in competition: Love and Shukla
Category: Feature Films | Duration: 110 min | Language: Hindi with English ST
Sexuality, love and the quest for privacy in the confinement of a one-room-apartment in a typical Mumbai ‘chawl’ building are the film’s main focus. The story is about an arranged marriage, showing the first week of the young couple’s life together and their struggling for some space and privacy.
Rickshaw driver Shukla comes from a devout Brahmin family. The only times he has ever intimately known a woman was on the display of his mobile phone, watching celluloid starlets. When his mother arranges a sudden wedding, he and his young wife have the same experience as so many couples in Mumbai: Completely unprepared and not knowing how partnership is supposed to work, they find themselves in a marriage, and on top of that together with the whole family in a tiny apartment which offers no space for sex or even a conversation without being disturbed.
